Cannabidiol (CBD)
There has been a resurgence of interest in Cannabinoids for use as potential pharmaceutical treatments. There are at least 113 different cannabinoids isolated from cannabis, exhibiting varied effects.(1) The most notable cannabinoid is the phytocannabinoid tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary psychoactive compound in cannabis.(2)(3) Cannabidiol (CBD) is another major constituent of the cannabis plant.(4)Cannabidiol (CBD) possesses medicinal and therapeutic properties. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol, CBD does not cause intoxication or euphoria, two unwanted side-effects for medicines. In light of CBD’s medicinal applications and the absence of psychoactive side-effects, demand for GMP-grade CBD from pharmaceutical companies has increased extensively in recent years.(5)
CBD is under investigation as a potential therapeutic treatment for various illnesses and diseases, including multiple cancers, seizures, dermatological conditions and anxiety. As of 1st November 2018, specialist doctors can prescribe cannabis-based products for medicinal use in humans which fall within schedule 2 to the Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2001 without requiring a Home Office licence to lawfully write a prescription.(6)
